Face Value |
It is an old expression, and a true one, that we take people on face value. And one of the most important things about a face is a pleasant smile. Smiling is like the parting of a curtain on a stage. Two rows of teeth appear. Are they white, or stained? Do they show good care, or neglect? The effect of well-groomed hair, a smooth complexion, and an attractive face may well be ruined by a smile that shows unsightly teeth. Even more tragic than good looks ruined a by bad teeth is the person who doesn’t dare smile because of what his smile shows.
The importance of good teeth goes far beyond the impression they make on other people. For instance, they are necessary for clear speech. Certain sounds, such as s and th, cannot be pronounced properly if any teeth are missing in front. Teeth grind food into small particles and thus get it ready for digestion. Poor teeth may not do this job well. If teeth become infected, they may cause discomfort and occasionally the infection may be carried to other parts of the body.
